Case Study - EMS
Scope of Work :  Development of  TR-69 based EMS solution for a Security Gateway provider.

System Overview :  Rebaca has developed a WAN based remote management system to perform single point monitoring and management of various fault & configuration of parameters as well as backup, restore, upgrade and rebooting functionality. The system followed the broad scope of TR-069 protocol for device discovery, configuration management, system administration and firmware upgrade. The system is based on the TR-069-like agent running on the device and ACS-like CMS running on a server.

CMS

Agent Implementation : The Agent comprises a low footprint HTTPS Client, an XML-RPC parser/writer and the TR-069 framework stack. The Agent is integrated with the device capabilities using underlying API calls to the device functions. All method calls are implemented in stub-like manner easing porting into another device with different capabilities. A low footprint HTTPS Server serves some of the optional methods implemented. XML-RPC was chosen instead of the standard SOAP based protocol because of lower footprint considerations. These can however be replaced with the standard SOAP parser and writer when necessary.

TR069 Related Tasks :

  • Provisioning & Monitoring: Individual Parameter Get/Set – Manual by device/group, scalar as well as tabular types
  • Vendor specific methods like system fault generation
  • Parameter templates – Manual creation/modification/application to device/group, extraction from device
  • Parameter change notification support – active/passive
  • Configuration backup – Manual/Scheduled, by individual device/group
  • Configuration restore – Manual/Scheduled, by individual device
  • Firmware upgrade – Manual/Scheduled, by individual device/group
  • Remote reboot - Manual/Scheduled, by individual device/group
  • Vendor specific methods like %age completion of upgrade, system fault generation

Management System :

  1. Device Auto Discovery
    • Devices report to the configured ACS after boot-up.
    • TR-069 implementation means discovery works even across NAT
  2. Configuration Management
    • Configure multiple devices simultaneously across different browser sessions
    • Different Ethernet Switching Parameters
    • QoS
    • Adherence to TR-069 means devices can be configured even on the far side of a NAT server using STUN.
  3. Performance and Event Management
    • View performance and event details at device level.
  4. Reporting
    •  Generate customized server health reports for historical and trending  analyses.
  5. System Administration
    • Performs various system administration activities like rebooting, syncing with NTP, saving settings to flash etc.
    • Backup and Restore of configuration on immediate or scheduled basis.
  6. Device Upgrade
    • Managing upgrade images
    • Upgrading devices on an immediate or scheduled basis
  7. User Management
    • Controlling access rights by creating various user groups, which defines the levels of access.
